Everything you need to get a Storyline course reporting learner data.
New here? Read The Loop first. It's five steps, and the app only does two of them — knowing which two saves the most common mistake.

Building Storyline Courses That Report Learner Answers
How to build a course so its answers can be recorded. What reports on its own, what needs wiring, and what will never report no matter what you do.
Read this before you build. It's the one that saves rework.
Setting Up a Tracker
Uploading a course, reading the warnings, checking what will be recorded, generating, and the publish step the app can't do for you.
Reports and Exports
Generating a report, what's in one, getting your data out, and the limits that apply.
Common Questions
I generated a tracker. Why is no data arriving?
Because generating isn't publishing. You need to re-import the downloaded
.story into Storyline, publish it, and put the published course in front of
learners — see
Publish. If you have
done all that, work through
Check Data Is Arriving.
My tracker says Live but there's no data. Generated means ready to receive. Live means at least one real event has arrived. See Tracker Statuses.
I previewed the course myself and nothing was recorded.
Previews from articulateusercontent.com and cloud.scorm.com are tagged as
test and excluded from analytics by default, so your own runs don't distort the
data. See Optional Settings.
What do all these warnings mean? Have I broken something? No. Warnings never block anything — they tell you what will and won't reach your data while you can still change it. See Check the Warnings.
Generate report is greyed out. A tracker needs at least 50 recorded events. See Before You Can Generate.
My export has fewer rows than my tracker holds. An export reaches back a fixed number of days as well as a number of rows — on Pro, 180 days. Anything older than the window is left out, and the dialog tells you when it is cutting. The most recent data is always kept. See Exporting Data.
Will my report update as more data comes in? No. Reports are snapshots, fixed when generated. Generate a new one for fresh data; earlier ones stay unchanged. See Reports Are Snapshots.
I changed my course. What do I need to do?
Upload the edited .story again, generate, then re-import and republish. See
Changing a Course After It's Live.
Where did my generated file go? Wherever your browser saves downloads. It keeps the course's own name, so search your Downloads folder for the course title rather than for "Data Trackers". If you have lost it, open the tracker and generate again — it costs nothing and produces the same file.
How long is my data kept? Retention runs from your plan: 30 days on Free, 90 days on Starter, 180 days on Pro, 12 months on Business. Older events are removed automatically. Export anything you need to keep for longer — export is available on every tier.
Can I delete a tracker, or its data? Yes, from the tracker's own settings. Deleting stops collection immediately and removes the tracking keys. We email you a CSV of everything that tracker collected before the stored data is permanently deleted, so deleting is not the same as losing the data. A tracker you never generated has no data and is simply removed.
Who can see my data? Everyone on your account with a login. Learner data is yours — we process it on your behalf and never sell it or use it to train AI models. Learners themselves are recorded under an anonymous id, not a name, unless you deliberately send something that identifies them.
My report is missing a question, or a number looks wrong. Check the raw data first — Dashboard → Raw data is the record, and the report is written from it. If the answer is in the raw data but not the report, tell us. If it is in neither, the question was never captured: look for a warning about it on the tracker, and see Check the Warnings.
Can I stop my own test runs polluting the data?
They already are excluded. Previews from articulateusercontent.com and
cloud.scorm.com are tagged as test by default. Add your own staging domain
under Privacy Settings → Test Sites and it will be treated the same way.
Still Stuck?
Four things solve most problems, and all of them are faster than waiting for a reply:
- Check the warnings on your tracker. They name the slides affected and say what to do. Most "it didn't record X" questions are answered there.
- Look at Raw data before anything else. It is the actual record. If the data is there, the problem is in the report or the export, not the capture.
- Confirm you published the downloaded file, not your original. This is the single most common cause of no data arriving.
- Re-read the publish steps. Generating is not publishing.
